Milo Djukanovic

The Montenegrin police have increased the security measures against the former president of Montenegro, Milo Djukanovic, after the information that an assassination attempt is being prepared against him.

This became known on July 14, after the day before some media in Montenegro, which, citing sources from the security sector, announced that a criminal group from the region was preparing to kill Djukanovic and that the former president of Montenegro was informed of this by an unidentified member of the foreign services.

"The police have received the appropriate information from the National Security Agency [ANB]. We emphasize that the reliability of the information is still being checked by ANB. "Immediately after receiving the information, the Police, the Prosecutor's Office and the ANB took further measures and actions in their jurisdiction in a synchronized manner", the police announcement states.

The authorities say that immediately after receiving the information, a case was initiated by the competent prosecution.

The chairman of the opposition Democratic Party of Socialists, Danijel ?ivkovi?, is the only one who has officially announced that this party "knows about the details of the preparation for the possible assassination of the former president of Montenegro, Milo Djukanovi?".

He stated so at a press conference on July 13, responding to a journalist's question about media reports that an assassination attempt on Djukanovic was being prepared.

"We have knowledge of the details and we know what it is about. It is not up to us to communicate our information. I believe that the ANB and other competent institutions will come out with accurate data", said ?ivkovi?.

Referring to unofficial information published by the media, ?ivkovi? stated that Djukanovi? was warned about this by the circles of foreign intelligence agencies, but did not want to give details.

Referring to unidentified sources, a part of the media in Montenegro received the confirmation that the ANB received "operational information" for the preparation of the murder of Djukanovic.

On this occasion, Radio Free Europe asked ANB if it has received "serious operational information that an organized criminal group is preparing to kill Djukanovic", as reported by the media. This institution did not respond.

REL has also sent a question to the former president's office if it is true that he has informed the competent authorities about the information that an assassination attempt is being prepared. No reply came from that address either.

In the first police statement issued on July 13, she stated that she was not aware of the information about the preparation of the assassination of Djukanovi?.

In the latest announcement, the police explained that at the time of the announcements in the media about the preparation of the assassination, "ANB was cooperating internationally to verify that information".

"While the procedure for determining the relevant facts and circumstances, including their credibility, is ongoing, a decision has been made to strengthen security measures for the former president of Montenegro for preventive reasons."

The former president of Albania, Ilir Meta, has reacted to the news about the planned assassination of Milo Djukanovic, saying that this information is very disturbing for peace and stability in these areas.

Millo Djukanovic is the founder and leader of the Democratic Party of Socialists, the party that was in power in Montenegro for three decades.

His party lost the 2020 elections, and after losing the 2023 presidential election to Jakov Milatovi?, Djukanovi? retired from politics.

After that, the congress of his party was held, where Danijel ?ivkovi? was elected as the new president.

In addition to protocol announcements from the former president's office, Djukanovic has also given several interviews, but he does not participate directly in political life. /REL
