The new composition of the European Parliament was constituted on Tuesday.

It emerged from the elections that were held in all 27 countries of the European Union from June 6 to 9.

The Maltese Roberta Metsola was re-elected at the head of the EP, who will lead this institution for another two and a half years.

Metsola comes from the smallest country in the EU. She was first elected in January 2022, following the death of her predecessor, David Sassoli.

562 European representatives voted for Metsola.

This is the tenth composition of the European Parliament, which has 720 deputies.

Of these, 54 percent are new names, while 39 percent are women.

"We have to get up and be ready. In the last mandate, we learned that the future is nothing but unpredictable," said Metsola during a speech before the European deputies.

“This should be a house that cannot be afraid to lead and change. We have started, but we are not finished yet," she said.

Metsiola also called for strong protection of the rule of law, continued support for Ukraine, lasting peace in the Middle East, simplification of bureaucracy and stronger protection of social rights.

MEPs are the only representatives in EU institutions who are directly elected by the people.

Among the first tasks of the new composition of the EP will be the election of the president of the European Commission.

Ursula van der Leyen is aiming for re-election and EU governments have already agreed on her name.

However, the appointment must be confirmed by the EP.

The vote for von der Leyen is scheduled for July 18./ REL
