Netanyahu orders further expansion of security zone in Lebanon

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has announced that he has ordered the expansion of Israel's security zone in southern Lebanon in order to repel Lebanese cross-border attacks.

"In Lebanon, I have given instructions for the further expansion of the existing security belt, in order to finally deter the threat of invasion and keep anti-tank missile fire away from our border ," he said in a statement from the Israeli army's Northern Command.

In recent weeks, Israel has made further advances into southern Lebanon. Israeli forces are occupying land south of the Litani River, an area from which Lebanese civilians have been urged to evacuate. The Israeli military has blown up several bridges over the river, which divides Lebanon in two, in recent days as part of a wider offensive in the south.

On Friday, human rights activists warned that the demolition of river crossings by Israeli forces would cut off tens of thousands of residents in southern Lebanon from "essential lifelines," as the rate of killing, destruction and displacement across the country increased sharply. Also during the video statement, Netanyahu said Israel was attacking Iran and its allies with extraordinary force. /CNA
