Unusual in Italy/ 12 tons of "Kit Kat" chocolate stolen

Swiss giant Nestle announced today that a large shipment of KitKat chocolates, weighing around 12 tons to be exact, was stolen last week.

The company said the truck carrying 413,793 chocolates left its manufacturing plant in central Italy and was heading towards Poland when it disappeared. Nestle did not reveal where exactly the truck had disappeared, whose location is still unknown.

"We have always encouraged people to take a break with KitKat. But it seems the thieves took the message very seriously and stole more than 12 tonnes of chocolate," a spokesperson for the brand said, referring to the product's advertising slogan.

The firm said the theft could result in a massive shortage of chocolate on supermarket shelves in several European countries. It also warned that the missing chocolates could find their way into unofficial sales channels.

But Nestle said that if this happens, it would be possible to track the stolen goods by scanning the unique batch codes found on each chocolate bar. / CNA
