Tragedy on the Greek coast / 22 migrants die after six days at sea

Twenty-two migrants have died off the Greek coast after spending six days on a dinghy bound for Europe.

According to the Greek coastguard, 26 survivors, including a woman and a child, were rescued by a European border agency ship the day before. Two of the survivors were taken to hospital in Heraklion on the island of Crete.

According to reports, the migrant boat had set off from the port of Tobruk in eastern Libya on March 21. Bad weather and a lack of food and water contributed to the deaths, the Greek coast guard said.

"During the journey, the passengers of the dinghy lost orientation and were left at sea for six days without water and food," the Greek coast guard said.

Greek authorities said two South Sudanese men, aged 19 and 22, had been arrested in the case on suspicion of human trafficking. They are charged with "illegal entry into the country" and "negligent homicide."

The coast guard said 21 of the survivors were from Bangladesh, four were from South Sudan and one was from Chad. At least 41,696 arrived in Greece by sea in 2025, according to the UN refugee agency, UNHCR. More than 4,000 have arrived so far this year.

The journey can be dangerous, especially in bad weather, while people smugglers often overload boats without enough supplies or life jackets.

In December, 17 migrants were found dead inside a boat that had filled with water and was partially submerged off the coast of Crete. /CNA
