Rising fuel costs/ Two Australian states scrap public transport fares

Public transport will be made free in two Australian states due to increasing fuel shortages due to the war in Iran.

Citizens in Victoria will be able to travel for free on trains, trams and buses for a month starting March 31, a measure described as a "temporary measure" to offset rising petrol prices.

Meanwhile, in Tasmania, ticket fees for buses and ferries have been waived from March 30 to July 1.

Since the outbreak of the Iran war, the flow of oil through the Strait of Hormuz has been severely restricted and fuel prices have risen sharply in Australia and the wider Asia-Pacific region.

Petrol prices in Australia have risen sharply from an average of $1.70 per litre (£0.88) before the war to around $2.50 per litre in some diesel-powered boats. /CNA
