Climate change/ 1.5 million Australians at risk from natural disasters

A climate change report predicts that 1.5 million Australians living in coastal areas are at risk from rising sea levels by 2050.

Australia's first National Climate Risk Assessment predicted severe climate risks, such as floods, cyclones, heatwaves, droughts and fires.

The report considered three global warming scenarios - above 1.5°C, above 2°C and above 3°C.

By 2050, the report found that the number of coastal communities placed in the "high and very high risk" category in Australia will increase and if population levels remain at current levels, this means more than 1.5 million people will be at risk.

The report also found that coral reefs such as the Great Barrier Reef in Queensland and the Ningaloo Reef in Western Australia will face biodiversity loss./ CNA
