Rising tensions with Venezuela/ US deploys F-35 fighter jets to Puerto Rico

Military tension between the United States and Venezuela continues to escalate as five American F-35 fighter jets landed in Puerto Rico, while Caracas sharply criticized the US after it claimed that armed personnel on a Navy fighter jet raided a fishing boat sailing in Venezuelan waters.

Reuters news agency reported that five US F-35 fighter jets landed on Saturday at the former Roosevelt Roads base in Ceiba, Puerto Rico, as part of a deployment ordered by President Donald Trump to the Caribbean to bolster operations against drug trafficking.

Helicopters, Osprey ships and military personnel were also seen at the base, sparking protests in the area against the militarization of Puerto Rico.

The move came shortly after Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth made a surprise visit to Puerto Rico, and just days after Washington said it had carried out an attack in the southern Caribbean against a drug-trafficking ship operated by the Tren de Aragua gang, which had set off from Venezuela. /CNA
