Turkish mayor arrested for corruption, opposition faces crackdown

Turkish authorities on Saturday arrested the mayor of an Istanbul neighborhood, along with 47 officials, as part of a corruption investigation, continuing a crackdown on the country's main opposition party.

Hasan Mutlu, the mayor of Istanbul's Bayrampa?a district, was taken into custody on Saturday morning on charges including bribery, embezzlement, fraud and bid rigging by the municipality, according to state broadcaster TRT Haber.

Istanbul police reportedly raided 72 locations, seizing documents and detaining Mutlu and several of his deputies.

Mutlu denied the accusations in X, writing: “I have only served Bayrampa?a and you, my esteemed fellow citizens… What has happened consists of political operations and baseless slander.”

He is the latest in a line of more than a dozen mayors from the Republican People's Party (CHP), along with hundreds of officials, who have been arrested in recent months on corruption charges, including Istanbul mayor and CHP leader Ekrem ?mamo?lu.

Imamoglu, who is considered the main rival of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, was arrested and detained in March, sparking widespread protests in Turkey.

He went on trial on Friday on charges of forging a university degree, with his next hearing scheduled for October. The prosecution is seeking a prison sentence of up to eight years and nine months and a ban on political activities./ CNA, translated by The Guardian
