Trump: Suspected Charlie Kirk shooting suspect in custody

US President Donald Trump said on Friday that the suspect in the killing of conservative influencer Charlie Kirk in Utah has been arrested, in what appears to be a significant breakthrough in the investigation.

"I think with a high degree of certainty we have him in custody. Someone who was very close to him. I hope he is found guilty, I think, and I hope he gets the death penalty. What he did, Charlie Kirk, he was the best person, but he didn't deserve this. He worked very hard and very well. Everybody liked him. I've seen the left struggle too," Trump said on Fox television.

Trump said he learned about the arrest five minutes before joining the event.

The suspect in custody in connection with Kirk's murder is a 22-year-old Utah man. Authorities have identified the suspect as Tyler Robinson.

Recently released footage from the attack showed a person wearing sunglasses, Converse shoes and a long-sleeved black shirt with an American flag and eagle running across a rooftop before jumping off the edge of the building and falling to the ground.

The suspect then crossed the busy road into a wooded area, where police said they discovered a rifle, which they believe is the weapon used to shoot Kirk. /CNA
