Local elections in Kosovo, electoral campaign begins

In Kosovo, on September 13, the parties certified for the local elections on October 12 officially begin their campaign.

During the election campaign, candidates for mayors and local assemblies will unveil their programs and attempt to convince citizens to vote for them.

The network of organizations overseeing the electoral process, Democracy in Action (DnV), called on all political entities and candidates to conduct an electoral contest "in a responsible, fair, but also competitive spirit, always taking care to implement international laws and best practices for a peaceful, just and democratic process."

"In particular, DnV considers it extremely important to respect the Code of Conduct for Political Entities, their Supporters and Candidates. In this regard, we call on responsible institutions to guarantee equal implementation of the legislation," the network said in a statement.

In the October 12 elections, 2 million 69 thousand 98 voters will have the right to vote for the election of mayors in 38 municipalities. Of these, 43 thousand 993 are voters abroad.

Overseas voters will be able to vote by mail starting September 17th.

The Central Election Commission has previously announced that the October elections will be organized in 938 polling centers with 2,625 polling stations. 5,626 candidates are competing in these elections, of which 206 are candidates for mayor and the rest for seats in municipal assemblies.

For the electoral race, the CEC has certified 93 political entities – 32 parties, 32 civic initiatives, two coalitions and 27 independent candidates. Kosovo held its last local elections in October 2021.

At that time, the Democratic Party of Kosovo had won the most municipalities, followed by the Democratic League of Kosovo./REL
