New law approved/ Uzbekistan reduces prison sentences by 30 days for reading

Uzbekistan has passed a law that allows prisoners to reduce their prison sentences by up to 30 days a year by reading certain books, included in a special list. But the educational exercise is not an option for all prisoners.

But now, a prisoner in an Uzbek prison can have his sentence reduced after proving to a special commission that he has read Ernest Hemingway's world-famous book, "The Old Man and the Sea."

The country's Senate has approved legislation that allows prisoners to shorten their sentences by reading.

The measure does not apply to those serving life sentences, but according to officials, more than 13,500 prisoners across the country could benefit.

The system will be overseen by a special commission. After reading a book, prisoners will take an exam to show they have understood the content. The commission will include representatives from local councils, civil society, self-governing bodies and prison administrations. Only those who pass the exam will be eligible for a reduction in sentence. /CNA
