The Serbian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ivica Dacic, said that he is an advocate of the best possible relations with the United States, but Serbia cannot listen to them and recognize Kosovo.
At the celebration of America's Day in the Serbian Parliament - an event organized by the Congress for Serbian-American friendship - Dacic said that anyone who tries to pressure Belgrade to recognize Kosovo will not succeed.
"Such an approach to the issue of resolving the situation in Kosovo will never succeed. We have signed the Brussels Agreement and continue to be a constructive partner in the dialogue", said Dacic, Beta agency reported.
Dacic said that Serbia's relations with Russia have nothing to do with Belgrade's relations with Western countries.
"When was the last time an American president visited Serbia? Many of us were not even alive. The last British Prime Minister to visit us was Margaret Thatcher. They have visited all other countries, do you think they don't visit Serbia because it is not strong? No, how can we have partnership relations with countries that are not in our interest", said the Serbian chief diplomat.
On the other hand, the American ambassador in Belgrade, Christopher Hill, said that the relations between Serbia and the USA are stable and do not depend on developments in other countries.
Serbia does not recognize Kosovo's independence, but since 2011, the two countries have been holding dialogue for the normalization of relations. This process is mediated by the European Union and supported by the United States.
Kosovo demands that an eventual agreement at the end of the process include mutual recognition, while Serbia intends to reach a compromise solution - without elaborating on what kind of compromise it is./ REL
