The US warns Pyongyang of consequences if it supplies Russia with weapons

The United States expressed concern over the possibility of North Korea supplying weapons to Russia, for the aggression it has undertaken against Ukraine, while data are being added that the talks between the two countries on this issue are progressing significantly. Vice President Kamala Harris said a possible meeting between President Putin and leader Kim Jong Un this month to discuss weapons would be an ill-advised step.

Vice President Kamala Harris said in an interview with the Associated Press news agency that Washington is carefully following the actions of Russia and North Korea. Speaking from Indonesia, where she was attending a high-level meeting of Southeast Asian countries, Ms Harris said Moscow's move to approach Pyongyang for talks proved its failure in aggression against Ukraine.

"Any cooperation between Russia and North Korea on the supply of weapons to Moscow would be an ill-advised step. At the Munich Conference I stated on behalf of the United States that Russia has committed crimes against humanity and what it means for a country to give weapons to a country that has committed crimes against humanity and what the consequences would be given that they would be used against grain warehouses and beyond, the list is long. So it's a rash move and I'm worried about it. We are concerned about this. We will continue to monitor the situation, of course, to hold Russia and North Korea accountable," Ms. Harris said.

Washington says arms talks between Russia and North Korea are actively progressing.

National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan warned North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on Tuesday that his country will pay a price for supplying Russia with weapons it will use in Ukraine.

"Supplying Russia with weapons to use in war to attack grain warehouses and the heating infrastructure of major cities, to aid it in its efforts to occupy territory belonging to another sovereign nation will have consequences for Korea of the North. She will pay a price for this in the international community," National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan told reporters at the White House.

The Kremlin on Tuesday declined to comment on statements by US officials that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un plans to travel to Russia this month to meet with President Putin and discuss arms supplies to Moscow.

If this trip goes ahead, it would be the North Korean leader's first visit abroad and the first since the start of the coronavirus pandemic.

The Minister of Defense of Russia, Sergei Shoigu, said on Monday that the two countries are discussing the possibility of conducting joint military exercises./ VOA
