Over 60 Palestinians killed by Israeli attacks in Gaza

Israeli airstrikes killed more than 60 Palestinians in southern and central Gaza yesterday and last night, news agencies reported.

One of the strikes hit a "safe zone" declared by Israel, which was filled with thousands of displaced people.

In an apparent reference to the attack, the Israeli military said it targeted a commander in the Islamic Jihad militant group's naval unit west of the city of Khan Jonis.

She said she is analyzing the reports of the killing of civilians.

Officials at Naser Hospital in Kan Jonis said at least 17 people were killed in this attack alone.

The Israeli military has carried out several deadly attacks in recent days in Gaza, including one on July 13 in the refugee camp, Al Mawasi, where more than 90 people were killed. The war in Gaza began last October, when Hamas - a terrorist group designated by the US and other powers - attacked Israel, killing around 1,200 people and taking hundreds more hostage.

In response, Israel launched an intensive campaign of attacks on Hamas-controlled Gaza, which continues to this day.

According to authorities there, over 38,000 people have been killed since the war began.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said this week that the death toll in Gaza "is unacceptably high".

International mediators, including those from Egypt and Qatar, are working to convince Israel and Hamas of a deal that would halt the fighting and free the roughly 120 hostages still held by the militant group in Gaza.
