Kim drives new tank, threatens the West with war

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un joined his troops in an exercise using a new type of battle tank, calling for greater efforts to prepare for war, state media reported Thursday.

The North's tank drill was billed as a response to the annual joint military drills of the United States and South Korea, which are expected to end on Thursday afternoon.

North Korea sees its rivals' drills as preparations for an invasion.

The North's drill on Wednesday was aimed at evaluating the combat capabilities of its tankers and included a new type of battle tank, which Kim called "the most powerful tank in the world," according to the Korean state news agency KCNA.

During the exercise, heavy tanks maneuvered in various difficult combat situations and fired shells at targets. Kim got into one of the new type tanks and drove it himself, according to KCNA.

Earlier, North Korea's Defense Ministry vowed to carry out "responsible military activities" in response to ongoing military exercises by the US and South Korea in Seoul. Kim later observed artillery firing exercises.

The joint US exercise with South Korea included the computer-stimulated command post exercise and 48 other types of field exercises, double the number of exercises held last year.

North Korea has increased weapons testing since early 2022 in an effort to modernize and increase its nuclear and missile arsenal.

In response, the US and South Korea have expanded trilateral drills and exercises, including Japan in them.

Experts say Kim likely wants to use his growing nuclear arsenal to secure concessions from the US, such as major relief from international sanctions against North Korea.
