He was attacked with a hammer/ Navalny's former ally vows to continue the

Leonid Volkov, a former close aide to late Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, has vowed to continue his fight against Russian President Vladimir Putin despite the injuries he sustained after being attacked on March 12 by a unidentified person in Vilnius, Lithuania.

"I will continue to work and I will not give up," Volkov said in a video posted on Telegram after being released from hospital in the Lithuanian capital.

"They wanted to turn me into a steak. Of course, with a meat mallet. "A man attacked me right next to my backyard," said Volkov.

He broke his hand and suffered other injuries as a result. Volkov described the attack as "a typical gangster salute from Putin."

Lithuanian Police spokesman Ramunas Matonis confirmed to the AFP news agency that a Russian citizen was attacked near his home in Vilnius around 10:00 p.m. on March 12, without naming Volkov.

According to journalist Sergei Parkhomenko, as reported by Meduza, Volkov lives in a small locality outside Vilnius. Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis described the attack as "shocking".

Images of the injured Volkov and his damaged car were posted on Telegram by Navalny's team.

The attack was first reported by Kyra Yarmysh, Navalny's former spokeswoman and secretary of his Anti-Corruption Foundation (FBK), who said on the X social network that an unidentified man smashed the window of Volkov's car and fired tear gas at his eyes, before hammering his flesh.

Later, she said Volkov fought off the attacker using "the car door and his legs".

Navalny, Putin's biggest critic, died last month under suspicious circumstances at the age of 47 in a prison in Russia's Arctic region, where he was serving a 19-year sentence.

Volkov and several other Navalny allies fled Russia in 2019 after authorities launched an investigation into the FBK and its activities.

He was put on the list of wanted persons in 2021 because of his activity against the Kremlin./ Rel
