Japan restarts reactor at world's largest nuclear power plant

Japan has restarted the reactor at the world's largest nuclear power plant for the first time since the devastating Fukushima earthquake and tsunami in 2011, which shut down all of the country's reactors.

The decision concerns reactor No. 6 at the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear power plant, northwest of Tokyo, and was made despite strong safety concerns from residents. The restart was delayed by a day due to a malfunction in an alarm system, while power generation is expected to begin next month.

The restart of the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa plant is the latest step in Japan's efforts to restart its nuclear program, a process that is still far from complete.

Nearly 15 years after the Fukushima accident on March 11, 2011, many residents are still unable to return home due to high radiation levels. Although Japan has stuck to its plan to dismantle the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant by 2051, it has repeatedly postponed the process due to various difficulties./CNA
