Israel carries out attacks in eastern Lebanon

A series of airstrikes hit eastern Lebanon on September 8, state media reported, as the Israeli military said it targeted positions belonging to the Iran-backed Hezbollah group.

Hezbollah has been designated a terrorist group by the United States. Meanwhile, the European Union has blacklisted the Lebanese group's military wing, but not its political party.

Lebanon's state news agency reported that seven airstrikes hit the eastern region of Hermel.

The Israeli military said it had struck a number of "targets belonging to the terrorist organization Hezbollah" in the Bekaa Valley, including what it described as training camps used by the group's elite Radwan force.

The Israeli military said Hezbollah's activities and weapons depots constitute "flagrant violations" of the agreement reached last November, which was intended to end more than a year of hostilities between Hezbollah and Israel.

Israel has continued to carry out airstrikes in Lebanon, despite the agreement.

The September 8 attacks come after the Lebanese government said last week that the army would begin implementing a plan to disarm Hezbollah - without providing further details about the plan. Hezbollah opposes the disarmament plan. /REL
