Pope Leo XIV canonizes the first two saints of his papacy

In the presence of some seventy thousand people in St. Peter's Square at the Vatican, Pope Leo XIV declared Carlo Acutis, the first saint of the millennium, giving the next generation of Catholics close role models. The pope also canonized another famous Italian figure who died young, Pier Giorgio Frassati.

"We proclaim and define Pier Giorgio Frassati and Carlo Acutis as Saints and we record them in the Book of Saints, establishing that in the entire Church they are venerated with devotion among the Saints," the Pope said as he read the traditional Latin formula.

This marked the first such celebration since Prevost became pope.

"Today is a beautiful feast for all of Italy, for the entire Church and for the entire world," said Pope Leo XIV at the beginning of Mass from the courtyard of St. Peter's Basilica.

The path to sainthood of Carlo Acutis is marked by two miracles, both recognized by the Catholic Church.

On May 20, 1990, Pope John Paul II beatified Pier Giorgio Frassati, following the miraculous healing of Domenico Sellan, who was suffering from Pott's disease. Since 2008, Frassati's incorrupt body has rested in a shrine inside Turin Cathedral, now a place of pilgrimage where the faithful gather to honor his legacy and seek his intercession. /CNA
