Over half a million people became German citizens in a five-year period, with nearly a quarter of them from Syria and Turkey alone.

According to Statista, the total number of naturalization rates between 2018 and 2022 has reached 651,495, with these new Germans coming from 169 countries, reports  SchengenVisaInfo.com. 

In detail, Syrians and Turks accounted for 23.3 percent of all citizenships granted for this period or 151,995 people.

British nationals follow the third largest group of nationalities to become German citizens, as over 33,000 citizens took up the new citizenship.

Ranking fourth and fifth, Romania and Poland were the countries of origin for almost 60,000 people naturalized since 2018, while Italy ranks seventh, with 22,155 Italians opting for German citizenship during the same period.

This means that more than 12 percent of the new German citizens were from other EU countries, representing 80,435 people in total.

Following the adoption of the 16 German federal "Landes", foreigners are now allowed to hold dual, original and German citizenship.

The new law could enable around 50,000 people with Turkish roots to become German citizens, the Turkish Community in Germany said. It is estimated that around 1.5 million citizens of Turkish origin live in Germany and have not yet obtained citizenship. / CNA
