End of the struggle/ Tattoo artists in South Korea now work for free

After more than three decades of fighting for legitimacy, tattoo artists in South Korea can finally work without fear of arrest.

Since 1992, tattoos have been considered a "medical act," allowing only licensed doctors to perform the practice, while professional artists constantly risked legal penalties or blackmail.

This historic change comes after a long campaign led by artists, who argued that body art has no connection to medical practices.

While South Korean society still remains conservative, public perception has changed significantly, especially thanks to the influence of young people and famous music and sports stars, who have normalized the display of tattoos.

Although the health ministry plans to introduce a new testing system for licensing artists next year, for the tattoo community this is a moment of liberation.

"Things are finally back to where they should be," says Doy, one of the most well-known artists who has worked with names like Brad Pitt, painfully remembering colleagues who suffered severely during the years of prohibition. /CNA
