Ukraine's new strategy to reclaim territory/ Strikes Russian supply lines

Ukrainian military forces are intensifying their campaign to destroy vehicles supplying Russian troops along strategic routes into occupied territories, using new drone technology equipped with artificial intelligence (AI).

At least 14 attacks on vehicles carrying food, fuel and ammunition on key routes linking Russia with Crimea and other occupied territories in southern Ukraine have been confirmed in the past week, the BBC reports.

Analysis by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) shows that Ukraine is managing to regain more territory than it is losing for the first time since 2023. Although the war has entered its fifth year and Russia has expanded control in eastern and southern Ukraine, recent months have not seen major territorial changes by either side.

Experts estimate that recent advances in drone technology, including the AI-equipped system called Hornet, have enabled Ukraine to strike Russian targets at greater distances and with higher accuracy.

Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov stated on Wednesday that the strategy called "logistical blockade" aims to increase pressure on the Russian army in the rear and deny it the opportunity to conduct sustained offensive operations.

At least 10 incidents have been recorded on the road segment between the Russian border and the occupied city of Mariupol, while another attack was reported southwest of Melitopol. This route is considered vital for supplying Russian forces on the front line and in Crimea.

Ukrainian officials believe that striking these supply lines could weaken Russia's ability to support military operations in occupied territories and slow its offensives at the front.

Ukraine's innovative use of technology shows that the war is not at a stalemate, according to George Barros of the Institute for the Study of War (ISW). He points out that Ukrainian forces are using mechanized equipment in tactical maneuvers that would have been impossible just a year ago.

Barros estimates that Russia's ability to conduct frontline penetration missions will continue to weaken as the Ukrainian campaign of medium-range drone attacks is forcing Russian logistical and operational bases to move further away from the front. This, he says, reduces supplies and support for infantry units conducting penetration operations.

One of Ukraine’s elite drone units, the 412th Nemesis Brigade, said this week that Russian commanders have restricted the movement of heavy military equipment in southern Ukraine and are trying to avoid detection by drones by using unpaved fields and roads. Meanwhile, the Russian-appointed leader of the occupied areas of the Kherson region, Vladimir Saldo, has also ordered restrictions on civilian traffic along this strategic route.

According to expert assessments, the rapid development of drone technologies is significantly changing the way warfare is conducted, giving Ukraine a significant operational advantage in striking Russian supply lines and troop movements. /CNA
