EU talks/ Iceland's parliament approves holding a referendum at the end of

Iceland's parliament approved a referendum on August 29 on opening accession talks with the EU, giving the green light to the government's plan that could make the country the bloc's 28th member by the end of the decade.

After four years of negotiations with Brussels, Reykjavik abandoned the effort in 2013 when a Eurosceptic government took power. Rising living costs and the war in Ukraine have revived interest in joining the EU, recent polls show.

If Icelanders vote to continue talks, the final terms of membership would also have to be approved in a second referendum.

But if they vote against the government's proposal on August 29, the effort to restart negotiations will be halted. /CNA
