Threat from Russia/Norway to French nuclear zone

Norway is reviewing its security strategy. In the future, the country should become part of the French nuclear defense umbrella, the two countries announced. This is a reaction to the threat from Russia.

Norway will be part of France's future nuclear defense umbrella, French President Emmanuel Macron announced during a visit to Paris by Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Storr. The move would mean that an attack on Norway could trigger a French nuclear response. The move is said to come amid growing awareness that Europe needs to take greater care of its security.

Macron's offer to many countries

In March, France offered to extend its nuclear protection umbrella to other European countries. Several countries - including Germany - responded positively to the offer. Norway is now the latest country to receive French nuclear protection, after Poland and Lithuania, which also border Russia.

Norwegian Prime Minister Storr highlighted Macron's initiative to expand France's nuclear defense in Europe, especially given the threat from Russia. However, deterrence will continue to be provided primarily through NATO. The United States has said it will continue to provide nuclear defense for Europe.

France is the only nuclear power in the EU

As Macron explained in March, the expansion of the French nuclear umbrella could include the participation of partners in French nuclear exercises. Strategic elements could also be temporarily deployed to allies. In the European Union, after the United Kingdom's exit in 2020, France is the only remaining nuclear power. According to the SIPRI Peace Research Institute, the country possesses about 290 of the world's approximately 12,200 nuclear warheads, making it the fourth-largest nuclear power after Russia, the United States and China./ DW
