Erdogan lobbies Musk to open Tesla factory in Turkey

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has called on American tycoon Elon Musk to open a new Tesla factory in Turkey, becoming the latest leader to lobby the world's richest man.

Erdogan and Musk have held a series of meetings in Turkey and on the sidelines of international forums, deepening their friendship even more on Sunday in New York.

Erdogan's office said Monday that he has asked Tesla to open its seventh factory in Turkey.

The state news agency in Turkey, Anadolu, has said that Musk told Erdogan that the latter's country is among the "most important candidates" for opening the new factory.

Attempts similar to Erdogan's have been made by French President Emmanuel Marcon, who met Musk in June, as well as Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez.

Erdogan is in New York to attend the meetings of the United Nations General Assembly.

He will give a speech in it on Tuesday.

Tesla currently has six factories, including two outside the United States – one in Shanghai, focused on the Asian market, and another in Berlin, focused on the European market.

Currently, the company is opening a factory in Mexico and plans to have a presence in India as well./ REL
