The European Union should speed up supplies of ammunition to Ukraine, as the country's forces need 1,000 artillery rounds every day in the Bahmut region alone, said the European bloc's diplomacy chief, Josep Borrell.
Borrell said Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba told his EU counterparts during the meeting in Stockholm that Kiev needs more support to defend itself against Russian aggression.
Around the eastern city of Bahmut, where fierce fighting has been going on for months, " Ukraine needs about 1,000 artillery rounds every day ," Borrell said on May 13, after the EU meeting.
Asked how the EU could speed up supplies, Borrell said member states must take ammunition from their stockpiles and overcome logistical challenges.
In March, EU ministers approved a plan worth at least 2 billion euros to supply Ukraine with 1 million artillery and missile rounds over 12 months.
The plan envisages that EU countries will take the munitions from their stockpiles and jointly make new purchases.
Borrell said that Ukraine in particular needs ammunition for long-range weapons " because the Russians are bombing from a distance."
" The Ukrainians must have the capacity to attack in the same range ," he said.
Before the meeting, Kuleba said that ammunition for long-range weapons will be at the center of the discussions.
This meeting was held on the day Germany announced a new military aid package for Ukraine worth 2.7 billion euros. This will be the largest aid package that Berlin will give to Kiev, since Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022./ REL
