Zelensky, visit to Rome
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky

The Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky, started his visit to Rome on May 13. Zelensky's visit comes shortly after Russia carried out a major drone strike in Kiev and shelled cities in central and southern Ukraine, causing extensive property damage.

Also, the visit to Rome comes at a time of reports that Ukraine has made progress in Bahmut, a town in the east of the country, where fierce fighting has been going on for months.

In Rome, Zelensky will meet with Italian President Sergio Mattarella, Prime Minister Georgia Meloni and Pope Francis.

Pope Francis told reporters last month that the Vatican is involved in a peacekeeping mission aimed at ending the conflict sparked by Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

The visit of the Ukrainian president to Rome comes on the same day that Germany announced a new military aid package for Kiev worth 2.7 billion euros. This is the biggest package that Germany will send to Ukraine since the invasion began.

Meanwhile, on May 14, Zelensky is expected to accept the prestigious Charlemagne Award in the German city of Achen.

It is still unclear whether Zelensky will accept the award in person and whether he will travel to Berlin to meet with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

Overnight, Kiev's air defenses shot down all drones launched by Russia, the Ukrainian capital's military administration said, without specifying the number of drones.

There are no reports of damage or casualties yet, but this is the sixth drone attack in Kiev this month.

Meanwhile, in Kmelnitski, in central Ukraine, several people were injured and there was damage to critical infrastructure, following Russian shelling overnight, Ukrainian authorities reported.

Even in Mykolaiv, the authorities have reported three wounded after Russian shelling, while damage to a factory and several residential buildings has also been reported./ REL
