Former Pakistani Prime Minister, Imran Khan

On Wednesday, the Supreme Court of Pakistan ordered the release of former Prime Minister Imran Khan from prison, calling his arrest illegal.

The former prime minister's lawyers have argued that his detention from the court premises in Islamabad on Tuesday was illegal.

He was taken into police custody two days ago outside the Supreme Court premises in the capital Islamabad on corruption charges.

The former senior official has denied this accusation, stressing that it has a political background.

Khan's arrest sparked public outrage, which escalated into violent protests that left 10 people dead and 2,000 arrested.

He was removed from the post of prime minister in April of last year and since then he has been campaigning for early elections./ CNA.al
