The body of a passenger who was on board the plane that disappeared from radar in Indonesia has been found today. The plane with 10 people on board, an ATR 42-500, belonging to the Indonesian Air Transport Group, which had taken off from Yogyakarta to Makassar, lost all contact with air traffic control on Saturday in the Maros area, South Kelibia.

Teams sent to the scene found the plane's body, rear section and windows, Muhammad Arif Anwar, head of the search and rescue agency in Makassar, said during a press conference.

"The body of a man was also found... at a depth of about 200 meters in a stream, near the wreckage of the plane ," the official said.

Andi Sultan, another local rescue official, confirmed the discovery of a body and said it would be recovered tomorrow due to poor weather conditions in the area.

The plane was carrying three employees of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, who were on an aerial surveillance mission, as well as seven crew members. Authorities had initially stated that there were eight crew members on board the plane, but this was later changed.

In total, more than 1,000 people are involved in the operation to find other bodies. Bangun Nawoko, an army officer, told reporters that rescue operations were being carried out with difficulty due to rough terrain and fog.

The head of Indonesia's National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT), Soerjanto Jahjono, said that based on the agency's initial findings, the plane crashed into the mountainside.

"This is called controlled flight in terrain. The pilot managed to control the plane and the collision was not intentional," Soerjado told local media.

Investigators have not yet determined the cause of the crash. The plane is suspected to have had technical problems but was deemed airworthy before the flight to Makassar. The type of aircraft from Franco-Italian manufacturer ATR is generally used for local and regional flights and has the capacity to carry 42 to 50 passengers. /CNA
