Tragic in Austria/ Five skiers die in avalanches within a few hours

Five skiers have died in two avalanches in the Austrian Alps, in an area that has seen heavy snowfall in recent days.

In an incident on Saturday in the Pongau region of Salzburg, an avalanche hit a group of seven skiers, killing four and seriously injuring another.

Meanwhile, about an hour and a half earlier, another avalanche took a skier to the ground and left him fatally injured. Bad weather has caused at least nine deaths in the Alps in the past week. On Tuesday, an avalanche killed a 13-year-old Czech boy who was skiing in the Austrian resort of Bad Gastein. 

Last Sunday, a 58-year-old skier was killed in an avalanche in Tyrol, also in Austria. In Switzerland, a German was killed in an avalanche and four others were injured while skiing in the open air on Friday. Last weekend in France, six skiers died after avalanches in different parts of the Alps. /CNA
