Three main parties fail to form government/Bulgaria heads to early elections

President Rumen Radev announced today that Bulgaria will hold early elections after the main parties refused to form a government following the resignation of the previous administration amid widespread protests.

Radev on Friday offered the Alliance for Rights and Freedoms a last chance to form a government, but it rejected the request, the third to do so this week, setting the stage for early elections, the eighth in the last four years.

Neither party in question holds enough seats in a fragmented parliament to create a stable majority.

"We will go to the elections ," Radev said.

Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov's coalition, backed by the largest parliamentary group GERB-SDS, resigned last month after weeks of street protests against endemic state corruption and a new budget that would have increased some taxes.

His departure, which occurred shortly before Bulgaria joined the eurozone on January 1, triggered a constitutional process where both GERB-SDS and the reformist PP-DB rejected Radev's bid to form a governing coalition this week.

Since the Alliance for Rights and Freedoms also rejected his offer on Friday, Radev will now have to appoint a caretaker cabinet and set a date for early elections.

Bulgaria, the European Union's poorest member, urgently needs political stability to speed up the absorption of EU funds into its crumbling infrastructure, encourage foreign investment and eradicate systemic corruption. /CNA
