Trump hosts Venezuelan opposition leader Machado at the White House

US President Donald Trump met this Thursday at the White House with Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado.

The meeting highlighted a dual US strategy that combines outreach to opposition figures with heavy pressure on Venezuela's interim government through oil sanctions, maritime law enforcement, and carefully managed economic incentives.

White House Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt said the meeting was taking place as she left the Oval Office, calling Machado an extraordinary and courageous voice for many of the people of Venezuela.

"The President has been looking forward to this meeting and expects a frank and positive discussion. He wants to hear directly from Ms. Machado about the realities on the ground in Venezuela and what is happening in the country," Leavitt said.

The meeting comes as the Trump administration is moving to seize and sell tens of millions of barrels of Venezuelan oil as part of a three-phase strategy outlined last week by Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

The plan aims to first stabilize Venezuela, then reopen its economy under US supervision and ultimately lead the country towards a democratic transition. /CNA
