Iran plans to extend internet shutdown until spring

Iran plans to maintain the internet shutdown throughout the country until at least the Iranian New Year, which coincides with the end of March, foreign media report, citing Iranian media activists informed by the government spokesman.

Government spokeswoman Fatemeh Mohajerani told media activists that access to international online services will not be restored before Nowruz, which falls around March 20.

"The shutdown, now in its second week, is also expected to remain in effect until after the end of the 40-day mourning period for those killed in recent national protests," it was reported today. 

Internet monitoring group NetBlocks said Iran's current outage had lasted 180 hours, surpassing the longest outage of 2019, with no partial or regional restorations so far.

Iran International reported earlier this week that Iranian authorities were in the final stages of implementing what sources described as an "internet kill switch" project, designed to enable extended shutdowns across the country. /CNA
