Forest fire advance/Evacuation order in Canadian city

Residents of one of Canada's largest northern cities, Yellowknife, have been ordered to evacuate their homes after warnings that wildfires could spread into the weekend.

The crisis in this city marks another difficult chapter in Canada's dealing with wildfires.

More than 1,000 wildfires are currently burning in the country, including 230 in the Northwest Territories, as Canada, and much of the world, records extreme heat.

"Unfortunately, our fire situation has gone the wrong way, with the fires burning in Yellowknife now posing a real threat to the city," said Shane Thompson, Minister of Environment Canada.

He has asked the city's 200,000 residents to leave the area by noon on Friday.

"I want to emphasize that the city is not in immediate danger. But without rain, the fire could reach suburbs by the weekend. You put yourself and others at risk if you decide to stay there later," he said.

Only one highway will be open in the area, while commercial and military flights will be diverted.

Canada's Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, has said on the "X" platform, formerly known as "Twitter", that Ottawa will help "however it can".

Strong winds are believed to have caused the fires, from which other towns in Canada have already been evacuated./ REL
