President Biden will visit the disaster areas in Hawaii

President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden will visit Maui next Monday to see first-hand the devastation from last week's wildfires in Hawaii that left 106 dead, the White House announced Wednesday.

The president plans to meet with survivors of the most devastating wildfires in the United States in more than 100 years, the White House said. Mr. Biden will also meet with rescue teams, federal, state and local officials.

"I want to go and make sure they get the help they need," President Biden said Tuesday, and of course without hampering efforts to find the bodies of more victims.

Authorities have not been able to identify many of the bodies found as a result of severe fire damage. In rare cases, fingerprints have been found. About 41 residents have offered DNA samples in case the bodies of relatives are discovered.

The fires, which at one point were spreading at a speed of one kilometer per minute, destroyed the town of Lahaina, a popular seaside tourism destination.

A mobile morgue arrived Tuesday to help Hawaii officials working to identify bodies as the city released the first names of people who died in a fire that gutted historic Lahaina a week ago, bringing the death toll to 106. the dead.

The US Department of Health and Human Services sent a team of forensic experts and equipment to identify the victims and process the remains, officials said.

The governor warned that dozens more bodies could be found. The fires, some of which are still not fully contained, are the deadliest in the US in more than a century. Their cause is under investigation.
