Genome analysis reveals new details of mummified corpse

Genome analysis has revealed new physical details of the mummified corpse found in the ice of the Italian Alps.

Dark eyes, black hair and a darker skin tone. This is what Otzi the Iceman, the mummified corpse found trapped in the ice of the Italian Alps, would look like.

Researchers conducting a higher genome analysis to learn more about Ötzi's genetic history and the mummified man's physical appearance have found genes associated with darker skin tone.

Albert Zink, co-author of the study and head of the Eurac Research Institute for Mummy Studies, said this is the darkest skin tone recorded in contemporary European individuals.

The 2012 findings reported a genetic affinity between Otzi and present-day Sardinians, and place Otzi as having ancestry related to steppe farmers. But the 2012 sample was contaminated with modern human DNA, which could have led to those results.

The new research uses a different extraction method, which reduced contamination, and reveals that the ice man had a high percentage of genes in common with early farmers from Anatolia./ CNA
