Turkey has recorded record temperatures of 49.5 degrees Celsius, as experts have warned that the Mediterranean heat wave trend will continue until the 2040s.

The record temperature was registered on Tuesday in the province of Eskisehir, said the Turkish Minister of the Environment, Mehmet Ozhaseki on the social network "X", previously known as "Twitter".

According to him, the previous record was recorded in 2021 – 49.1 degrees Celsius.

The National Weather Service warned Wednesday that the heat wave will continue to push the season's normal temperatures by 11 degrees.

The main reason behind this wave is believed to be climate change, said Baris Onol, professor of meteorology at Istanbul Technical University.

Although the El Nino phenomenon, which is currently active, affects rising temperatures, heat waves have become more frequent and longer in recent years, Onol told the news agency "dpa".

"Turkey will be more exposed to high temperatures in the next 30 to 40 years, like the entire Mediterranean region," said Onol.

He predicted that the peak of the tourist season in the future will be in September and October./ REL
