Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) is a viral infection transmitted mainly through tick bites (genus Nairovirus, family Bunyaviridae) and was first identified in the Crimea region in 1944. It is a disease that extends from southern Russia and Black Sea, writes Protothema.

The disease is considered "emerging" worldwide, with several countries reporting new human cases of CCHF in recent decades, including Georgia, the Republic of Turkey, Albania, and most recently, Spain.

In 2015 it was predicted that areas with a high probability of the disease are in parts of eastern and southern Europe. According to the same prediction, areas of Spain had a high ecological suitability for CCHF, which was however hidden in the published distribution, since the disease had not yet been identified in Iberia.

The 2020 study presented updated risk areas covering Spain, and also statistically compared the distribution of environments assessed as ecologically suitable for human CCHF with that of the main tick vectors.

According to today's guidance issued by the ECDC on the management of Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever, data suggest that some countries that have not yet registered CCHF may benefit from the attention they need to pay to this risk, especially those with Mediterranean coasts .

Compared to the 2015 model, some regions show increased ecological suitability for CCHF, particularly pockets across France, Italy, Spain, the Balkans and the Caucasus./ CNA
