German authorities arrest two people accused of spying for China

Two Munich residents have been arrested by German authorities on suspicion of spying for China.

According to the German Federal Prosecutor's Office, those arrested are a married couple with German citizenship, identified as Xuejun C. and Hua S. Prosecutors said the pair were suspected of working for a secret Chinese intelligence agency. 

"To secure access to scientific information about high-tech technologies with military applications, they established contacts with numerous scientists at German universities and research institutes ," prosecutors wrote. 

In particular, they focused on fostering contacts with university professors in the fields of aerospace and space travel, IT, and artificial intelligence.

Among other things, it is said that they posed as translators and employees of a German car parts supplier to gain access.

"Some scientists were lured to go to China on the premise of giving lectures to civilian audiences in return for remuneration. In reality, these presentations were made to state-affiliated arms companies,"  prosecutors said.

The couple were taken to the Federal Court of Justice (Bundesgerichtshof) in Karlsruhe, pending a decision on whether they will be held in custody. Further operations related to the arrests also took place across the states of Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg, Berlin, Brandenburg, Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia. /CNA
