Tragic accident in Belgium/ Train collides with school bus, 4 people die

Four people, including two children, died on Tuesday after a train hit a school bus in northern Belgium, the country's deputy prime minister, Maxime Prevot, said.

"A tragic collision between a train and a school bus occurred this morning in Bugenhout. Four people have lost their lives, including two children ," Prevot wrote on X.

Prime Minister Bart De Wever said he was "deeply affected by the terrible accident... In these moments, our sympathies are with the affected families."

Footage from the scene in the Flanders region shows the overturned and damaged bus on the edge of a road near a railway line. The passenger train was left stranded on the tracks.

Police spokeswoman An Berger told Belgian media that there were seven children, a supervisor and the driver on the bus, adding that no one on the train was injured.

"The collision was extremely violent ," Frederic Sacre, spokesman for the Belgian railway agency, Infrabel, told AFP, adding that the train was travelling at around 120 kilometres per hour when the accident occurred.

"The bus was thrown about 15 meters towards a metal pole," he said.

Sacre said that footage from the scene showed that the barriers at the railway crossing had been closed and that the red light was on at the time of the accident.

Belgian media reported that the students came from a school for children with learning difficulties.

Interior Minister Bernard Quintin expressed his deep sadness over the "tragic accident."

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen joined politicians' condolences, saying she was "heartbroken" by the crash.

"My deepest condolences go to the families of the victims and their loved ones," she wrote online.
