US carries out attacks in southern Iran/ Rubio: A deal is still possible

The US military has announced that it had carried out "self-defensive" strikes in southern Iran, including on missile launch sites and mine-laying ships.

"The strikes were conducted to protect troops from threats posed by Iranian forces ," Capt. Tim Hawkins, a spokesman for U.S. Central Command, said in a statement.

Captain Hawkins said the US strikes targeted an area near Bandar Abbas, a southern port city and home to an Iranian naval base located in the Strait of Hormuz.

After the attacks, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that a deal with Tehran was still possible despite new US military strikes on Iran.

"There were some talks today in Qatar so we'll see if we can make progress. I think there's a lot of talk about the specific language in the initial document, so it's going to take a few days. The president has expressed his desire to get it done. He's either going to get a good deal or no deal ," Rubio told reporters during an official visit to India.

Iran has yet to respond to the US attack. However, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baqai said earlier that while some progress has been made in talks to end the war, a deal is "not imminent." It is unclear what impact the attacks will have on any potential peace deal between the US and Iran. /CNA
