Pope Leo warns the world about the dangers of artificial intelligence

Pope Leo has published his first major document, the encyclical "Magnifica Humanitas" ("Magnificent Humanity"), in which he warns that the uncontrolled development of artificial intelligence could pose a serious threat to democracy, peace and human rights.

In the nearly 43,000-word document, the Pope points out that technological power is increasingly concentrated in the hands of private and transnational companies, which often have more influence than governments themselves. According to him, this concentration of power creates the risk of manipulation, dependence, social exclusion and new inequalities.

He calls for the creation of strong international legal frameworks to control the use of artificial intelligence, emphasizing that "it is not enough to just talk about ethics," but independent oversight, transparency, and political accountability are needed.

In the section on war, the Pope warns that the digital revolution is changing the nature of modern conflicts. He mentions cyberattacks, the manipulation of information and the automation of military decisions as dangers that could lower the threshold for the use of force and normalize war.

"The development and use of artificial intelligence in warfare must be subject to the strictest ethical constraints. It is unacceptable to entrust lethal decisions to artificial systems," he writes.

The encyclical also addresses the impact of artificial intelligence on democracy, education and the labor market. The Pope expresses concern about the spread of disinformation and emphasizes that indifference to the truth can lead to new forms of totalitarianism.

He also warns that automation and robotics are rapidly transforming the labor market, while economic gain should not justify the massive loss of jobs or the weakening of the human role in the economy.

Finally, the Pope calls for international cooperation and common global strategies to protect the most vulnerable societies from the consequences of artificial intelligence./ CNA
