26 years since the historic NATO attacks in Kosovo

Today marks 26 years since the start of NATO airstrikes against military-police targets in Serbia and Montenegro.

The attacks began at 19:45 when NATO planes dropped the first bombs against strategic positions of the army of the former Yugoslavia, as the two republics of the former Yugoslav federation, Serbia and Montenegro, were called.

The order to begin the bombing campaign was given by the President of the United States of America, Bill Clinton. That night, Clinton delivered a historic speech to the American people, announcing that he had ordered the Atlantic Alliance to begin the military operation as the only possibility of ending the fighting in Kosovo.

" We and the NATO Alliance have made every effort to achieve a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Kosovo. But President Milosevic, who in the recent past caused terrible wars in Croatia and Bosnia, has decided in favor of aggression instead of peace ," Clinton said.

The bombing lasted until June 9, when the Kumanovo Agreement, also known as Milosevic's capitulation, was reached. This was NATO's first military intervention since its formation, which is also known as the historic intervention./ CNA
