Powerful earthquake hits southwest China

A 6.6-magnitude earthquake struck southwest China on Monday, according to the US Geological Survey.

The epicenter of the earthquake was about 43 kilometers southeast of Kangding city in Sichuan province, with a depth of 10 kilometers.

There are still no reports of casualties.

Earth tremors were also felt in Chengdu province - which is currently under lockdown due to COVID-19.

Earthquakes occur quite often in China, especially in the southwest of the country.

An 8.0 magnitude earthquake in 2008 in Sichuan killed thousands and caused extensive damage.

Meanwhile, in June, two earthquakes in southwest China killed at least five people and injured dozens more.

Chengdu, a city of nearly 21 million people, on Sunday extended its lockdown due to new outbreaks of the coronavirus pandemic.
