Why does Erion Veliaj request the replacement of the security measure?

The arrested mayor of Tirana, with 13 serious charges, with a 60,000-page file sent for trial, Erion Veliaj, has filed a request to replace the security measure of arrest with imprisonment at the GJKKO.

Defendant Veliaj is requesting a relaxation of the security measure. The hearing to review Veliaj's request will take place tomorrow, and will be reviewed by Judge Etleva Deda.

The hearing will take place one day before the hearing that will take place on February 2 at the GJKKO. 

Why is Erion Veliaj requesting the replacement of the security measure of arrest with imprisonment?

Erion Veliaj was arrested on February 10, 2025. He faces charges of criminal offenses such as abuse of office, laundering of proceeds of crime, corruption, failure to declare assets, and bringing prohibited items into the cell, offenses that carry legal penalties of 5 to 15 years in prison.

From the moment of his arrest, Veliaj launched a broad campaign of attacks and accusations against justice, with slander and insults against the prosecutor in the case and the judges.

Veliaj put the prosecutors and judges on a shooting range, attacking and blackmailing him, accusing him of asking for an additional fee for the construction permit and that Veliaj had refused and had launched an investigation against him.

This is a fraud that has been going on for 167 days, as neither the arrested mayor himself nor the Veliaj family journalist, Mero Baze, have published any document with the signature of prosecutor Ols Dado regarding the request for the extension of the permit and any document with the refusal of the permit by Veliaj.

Veliaj continues his attack by abusively using the media as an instrument to lie, slander, and deceive.

What circumstances have changed for Erion Veliaj to be released from prison?

Erion Veliaj was put in prison because he tampered with evidence obtained from the investigations conducted.

Veliaj is once again a mayor saved by a scandalous decision of the Constitutional Court, which is composed of blackmailable judges with a miserable legal profile. Veliaj is in prison and has an office there because if he goes to the one in the center of Tirana, that is, to the mayor's office, he destroys evidence and SPAK has caught this in wiretaps, it is confirmed and fact-checked.

There are no mitigating facts and evidence to release Erion Veliaj. We are in the same facts and evidence, we are in the same situation. Moreover, the indictment was filed in July and we are in January.

After more than 7 months, dozens of hearings have been held and are being postponed endlessly, because Erion Veliaj does not go to court, because he knows very well what serious criminal offenses he has committed and what evidence the prosecution has brought to court.

What has changed in his legal situation for him to request a change in the security measure?

Veliaj continues to face the same accusations, his file has gone to court and with his tactics he has postponed a full 14 hearings.

Veliaj postpones 14 sessions, requests a replacement of the security measure, but is a coward who does not go to court to face the facts and evidence.
