Prosecutor General: The new draft of the Criminal Code goes in the opposite

Prosecutor General Olsian Çela was asked by MPs about the new and current Criminal Code. Çela said that he has expressed his position on the issue before, while adding that the punishments and the Current Code we have are harsh enough.

The Chief Prosecutor stressed that the new draft of the Criminal Code goes in the opposite direction to the principles of humanity. He added that the harsher punishments only aggravate current social problems.

"I also addressed this issue in the report to the Commission. It is a complex issue. I have a strong opinion on this. The code we have is harsh enough. The punishments are harsh enough. Prison cannot be the only solution to society's problems. We are moving in the opposite direction to the principles of humanism. In the EU, it is the principle of humanism that brings those countries together. Humanization is the essence, the approach that the draft Criminal Code should have. Harshening punishments only extremizes and aggravates the social problems we have ," said Çela.  /CNA
