Chief Prosecutor Olsian Çela answered questions from MPs regarding the issue of illegal construction and related referrals.

Çela said that there has been an increase in the activity carried out by the prosecution to crack down on the phenomenon in question. He added that there may be a rapid handling of cases, but there may also be a lack of investigations into the officials responsible for failing to carry out their duties regarding illegal construction.

"I can give you the figures for 2024. There are many cases because every year there is a high number of these cases. We have for 2024, 1130 proceedings, 207 defendants, 358 sent to trial, 400 convicted defendants. In terms of data, there is a clear increase in the activity carried out by the prosecution in combating the phenomenon. I cannot give a figure for criminal liability for IMT. Every time there is illegal construction, it must be investigated. The investigations are related, illegal construction may be related to abuse of office. I estimate that not in every case, every violation is a criminal offense. It is a phenomenon that is built case by case. The prosecution offices have a quick treatment of cases but there may also be a lack of efficiency in terms of the responsible officials who have not performed their duty for illegal constructions." , said Çela. /CNA
