The trial against former KLA leaders/KASH: The historical reality of the Kosovo

The Council of Albanian Ambassadors has issued a reaction to the latest developments in the trial of former KLA leaders in The Hague.

The statement states that this process, in the form it is taking, risks distorting the historical and legal reality of the Kosovo War.

It is further stated that this process risks amnestying the historical and political responsibility of the Serbian state leadership for the crimes committed in Kosovo.

The Council of Albanian Ambassadors expresses its deep concern regarding the recent developments in the judicial process taking place in The Hague against the leaders of the Kosovo Liberation Army.

This process, in the form and narrative it is taking, seriously risks distorting the historical and legal reality of the Kosovo War. The liberation war of the people of Kosovo was a legitimate and necessary reaction to a systematic state campaign of violence, ethnic cleansing and war crimes, carried out by the regime of Slobodan Milosevic, a regime already morally and legally condemned by the international community.

Any attempt to equate the state aggressor with the victim who fought for survival and freedom constitutes an insult not only to the people of Kosovo, but also to the Western international intervention itself, which was undertaken precisely to stop war crimes and genocide in the heart of Europe.

This distorted process risks, in an unacceptable way, relativizing and even amnestying the historical and political responsibility of the Serbian state leadership for the crimes committed in Kosovo. Such a development would be a grave historical injustice and a dangerous precedent for international law.

The Council of Albanian Ambassadors reaffirms its support for impartial international justice, but emphasizes that justice cannot and should not be separated from the historical truth and the full context of events.

The liberation of Kosovo was a legitimate act of an oppressed people, and the Kosovo Liberation Army remains a liberation force, not subject to political or legal revisionism. / CNA
