At the beginning of this academic year, the University of Korça is facing a decrease in the number of registrations in some of the branches of this university.

According to the rector Lorenc Ekonomi, a new distribution of students who are registered in the programs is observed, while the quotas are almost the same as last year.

So far, 487 students have registered in the first year at this university and the first place in the preferred branches is occupied by Computer Engineering, as a double branch with the Polytechnic University of Tirana.

"Until the day before yesterday, 487 first-year students were registered. We are almost at the old quotas, there is a new distribution. Computer science branches are preferred, that's the difference. First place in the preferred branches is occupied by the Computer Engineering branch, which was opened this year as a double branch with the Polytechnic University, and 100% of the quotas were immediately registered. Then comes Nursing, Midwifery, Finance, Sports, but there are registrations in all branches."

Programs related to a master's in teaching, specifically Mathematics and French, have a low enrollment figure. The Department of Economics will currently be the only one that will be closed as it has had zero registrations for several years, while in other branches with fewer registrations it will be the academic senate that will make a decision.

"Fewer students have programs related to a master's in teaching. Mathematics is in low numbers, a minority in French. The Department of Economics is sure to be closed because according to the law, when there are zero registrations for several years, it is up to the academic senate to make a decision. The senate will meet tomorrow. There are programs with few students, for these a decision will be made on how to deal with them.

In principle, I am not in favor of closing them, but the lecturers will undertake to teach these branches outside of their workload, because the students who are registered there have the right to be educated. The figures show that priority programs have decreased this year due to the reduction of quotas."
